On March 27, 2026 local time, a delagation from the World Bank Office in Ethiopia, together with the project owner, Addis Ababa Water and Sewerage Authority, visited the project site of the Eastern Catchment Wastewater Treatment Plants Project in Addis Ababa undertaken by CGCOC for an on-site inspection. The World Bank delegation highly commended the progress achieved in project construction and spoke highly of CGCOC’s strong contract performance and professional management demonstrated under a complex external environment.

During the inspection, the World Bank delegation listened in detail to a special report delivered by the project team on the project’s core work and conducted field visits to the two major construction sites at KITIME and KOTEBE. The delegation emphasized that despite multiple objective challenges during the project implementation period, including fuel shortages and logistical disruptions, CGCOC had continued to advance construction efficiently and made every effort to secure key schedule milestones, demonstrating a strong sense of responsibility and solid contract performance. The company’s professional performance throughout the whole process in quality control, work safety, and schedule management fully meets the World Bank’s stringent international standards and has set an industry benchmark for the smooth implementation of the project. The delegation expressed the hope that CGCOC would continue to uphold world-class construction standards and an efficient construction pace so as to complete the project successfully on schedule.

The delegation particularly noted that the Project is of landmark significance to public well-being, as it will improve the urban living environment and benefit millions of local residents. In August 2027, Ethiopia will host the 32nd Global Climate Change Summit (COP32), and this project will serve as a model urban environmental governance project in Ethiopia, showcasing its construction achievements to the world. As Addis Ababa is the seat of the African Union headquarters, the successful delivery of this project will also have a strong demonstration and leading effect on similar water infrastructure projects across Africa.

Project Overview

The Design, Build and Operate (DBO) of Eastern Catchment Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) in Addis Ababa City is a key public welfare project representing the World Bank’s largest investment in Ethiopia’s water sector. Throughout the entire project cycle, strict World Bank international standards for quality, schedule, safety, and environmental protection are being implemented, while the Irish consulting engineer carries out rigorous, full-process supervision in strict accordance with the contract provisions. The project is designed with a daily wastewater treatment capacity of more than 100,000 tonnes.
